The Role of Criw Cymraeg in a Primary School in Wales
Criw Cymraeg is a group of enthusiastic pupils who take on the responsibility of promoting the Welsh language and culture within their school. Their role is crucial in helping the school work towards achieving the Siarter Iaith (Welsh Language Charter), which aims to increase the use of Welsh in everyday school life and create a positive attitude towards the language.
Responsibilities of Criw Cymraeg
Encouraging Welsh Language Use
- Promoting the use of Welsh in and around the school, encouraging both pupils and staff to use Welsh beyond the classroom.
- Organising Welsh Word of the Week (Gair yr Wythnos) to introduce new vocabulary to the whole school.
- Reminding classmates and teachers to use simple Welsh phrases in daily interactions.
Supporting the Siarter Iaith
- Leading initiatives that help the school progress through the Siarter Iaith levels.
- Working with teachers to monitor and evaluate the school’s use of Welsh.
- Encouraging pupils to take part in Welsh assemblies, competitions, and cultural events.
Organising Welsh Activities
- Planning and leading Welsh-themed events such as Dydd Miwsig Cymru (Welsh Music Day) and Dydd Gwyl Dewi (St David’s Day) celebrations.
- Helping to organise Eisteddfodau (Welsh cultural competitions) and encouraging participation in poetry, singing, and storytelling.
Urdd
The Urdd was established in 1922 to give children and young people the opportunity to learn and socialise through the medium of Welsh. It is a diverse organisation which provides a wide range of activities across Wales. The children of the Model school have the opportunity to join the Urdd every September. This allows them to take part in sports, art and Eisteddfod competitions.
As a school we have a very active Urdd club. Children have the opportunity to meet in a Welsh environment. They compete in sport competitions and also represent our school in local Eisteddfods. We have been successful in getting through to the National Eisteddfod during the last three years. LLONGYFARCHIADAU!/CONGRATULATIONS! What an amazing achievement!
